Listen to the Smooth, Dulcet Tones of the Voice Coming Over the Sat Nav.

As a family-owned provider of quality second hand cars, Acklam Car Centre has stood and watched as the world of driving has changed. New technologies have made driving even easier than ever!

Case in point. Where once, the person in the driver’s seat would be left fumbling with a gargantuan fold away map to find their way, now all they need to do is listen to the smooth dulcet phones of the voice coming over the Sat Nav.

Download These Five Apps for an Easier Driving Experience

Which is why it shouldn’t surprise you to discover that there are apps you can download to your smart phone that make it even easier to drive, and at Acklam Car Centre, we suggest that if you’ve got an android, you start by downloading the following five driving apps…

  • Drive Gain: For nothing at all, you can download DriveGain; an app designed to help you save fuel whilst you drive. Use the app’s audio and visual feedback to cut fuel usage in transit, improve efficiency and save money.

  • Tom Tom: You’ve guessed it, there’s now a Sat Nav app, meaning you don’t have to pay an exorbitant amount to find your way along the UK’s roads. It may be £50, but compared to an actual Sat Nav, you’ll make a real saving and never get lost again!

  • Witness Driving: Pay a paltry 69p and gain ownership of a Witness Driving app. This app turns your phone into a video camera, to record footage of any accidents you have on the road, giving you evidence you can use in an insurance claim.

  • Glovebox: An app like this is definitely one for the driver with the unordered mind. It works like a glovebox, because it provides an easy to access and modify directory for your cars data i.e. tax insurance and MOT reminders. Pay a mere 69p and never struggle to find your cars information again!

  • JamCam: This one will be the answer to all your prayers. For absolutely nothing at all, you can get an app that gives you live traffic feeds for over 105 of the country’s most hectic motorways and A Roads. Use it to ensure you never get stuck in a traffic jam again!

Don’t Drive With a Apple Watch On

This week, Acklam Car Centre wanted to take the time to warn you not to drive with an Apple Watch on, after discovering that experts think doing so could be harmful.

Don’t Look at Your Phone and Drive

Through our work as a provider of top quality second hand vehicles to drivers across the North-East of England, Acklam Car Centre has seen the impact that smartphones have had on the driving population of the UK.

As smartphones and mobiles in general have become more popular, people have become more obsessed with them, even using them so much that they do it whilst they’re driving. This causes accidents and has been made illegal. Things could now be going the same way with Smart Watches.

What is an Apple Watch?

Recently, Apple unveiled the long (and we do mean long) awaited iPhone 6, and when they did they surprised the world, by unveiling the rumoured, but mysterious Apple Watch as Well.

Apple Watch

Essentially, it’s kind of like a smart phone you can wear on your wrist. According to Yahoo News UK, the watch issues regular updates from internet services, apps and the mobile phone of the user. Quite distracting, which is why the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) have taken the time to suggest people turn them off when driving.

This Could Significantly Impair Driving Performance

The Group said in a statement that “the latest piece of wearable technology from Apple will allow users to make and receive calls, check their messages and monitor their health by operating the device on their wrists. However, the IAM warns that this could significantly impair driving performance – being a major cause for distraction and road accidents.”

They went on to suggest that “constant alerts will require motorists’ regular attention,” and that “As opposed to using a legal hands-free piece of equipment the Apple Watch will require drivers to use two hands to operate the device – impacting speed, lane position and time spent looking at the road.”

Stay Focused on the Road

A damning argument, which is why Acklam Car Centre agrees that you should not use your Apple Watch and drive. More importantly though, this really does remind us that when you are driving, you shouldn’t let anything distract you, to ensure you stay safe on the road.

GM Introduces Hands Free Driving

Following a number of recalls, GM has announced this week that they are to introduce hands free driving, which Acklam Car Centre thinks could revolutionise the industry.

Car Technology is Changing All the Time

To be a provider of first rate second hand cars like Acklam Car Centre, is to find emerging car technology fascinating, The changing nature of the world in which we live, is quickly redefining the way we drive, altering the face of the global car industry.

One of the most exciting technological trends in cars right now is the rise of the self-driving car. This innovative technology is changing the way we think about driving. That is why it is no surprise that GM have jumped on the bandwagon, with the introduction of hands free driving.

Welcome to Super Cruise and Other New Car Technologies

According to Yahoo News UK, Mary Barra, CEO of General Motors, unveiled the plan last Sunday. Essentially, it will see the introduction of hands free technology to GM vehicles to make driving them safer, following a number of embarrassing recalls for GM this year.

Specifically, semi-auto pilot (dubbed ‘super cruise’) will be provided on certain 2017 model year cars for GM’s first rate Cadillac brand. Meanwhile, the same Cadillac model – the 2017 Cadillac CTS – will also include technology that allows vehicle-to-vehicle communication which reacts to others at intersections and in other situations

GM Will Make Driving Safe

In speaking out about the move, Barra revealed that this new technology will be available to customers outside of the US as well. With demand high in China and Europe – due to the increasingly heavy toll of GM related accidents – this is move that is sure to be welcomed.

Barra went on to elaborate, saying that “we are not doing this for the sake of the technology itself. We’re doing it because it’s what customers around the world want,” and that “through technology and innovation, we will make driving safer.”

Perhaps Now, People Will Be Able to Buy GM Vehicles Again

Well, Acklam Car Centre certain hopes so. It’s been a bit of a nightmare year for GM drivers, with a number of recalls due to safety issues. Hopefully, the move towards hand free technology will once again make it a good idea to buy GM vehicle!

Five Easy Ways to Kill Some Time in a Traffic Jam

When you’re stuck in a long line of cars after work, be thankful you’ve got Acklam Car Centre on your side this week, as we share with you five easy ways to kill some time in a traffic jam.

The Difficulties of the Commuters Life

We get a lot of commuters passing through our showroom every single day here at Acklam Car Centre; – the family owned provider of top quality second hand motors. As such, we understand the unique difficulties that come with the commuter’s life.

Acklam Car Centre provides 5 great tips to help you through a traffic jam

And there is no difficulty more frustrating than being stuck on your way back from work in a traffic jam. You’ve spent all day slaving away, you just want to get home and put your feet up, but you can’t. Why? Because there’s a line of cars stretching into the distance so long, you can’t even see the end of it, and all your left to do is wait. Wait and be monumentally bored. You can’t even break out your laptop and get some extra work done to pass the time – just in case, by some miracle, the car in front of you moves a few inches!

Try These Five Things to Be Less Bored When Stuck in a Traffic Jam

But that doesn’t mean you should sit there wasting your life away. There are plenty of ways Acklam Car Centre can think of to keep yourself occupied whilst stuck in a mind numbingly boring traffic jam…

1) Turn The Radio On: The most obvious is to turn the radio on, blare out some tunes and invoke your inner pop star to while away the time. The added advantage is that by sticking the radio on, you can listen out for any traffic news that might let you know how long you’re going to be stuck behind that impossibly large Family SUV.

2) Get in Touch With Family: These days, most cars come equipped with speaker phones, so why not give it a test drive. With your weekday usually so busy, it’s kind of hard to keep in touch with everybody normally anyway, so a traffic jam is the perfect time to catch up on your correspondence.

3) Network: Do you ever get the feeling that we just don’t take enough time to talk these days? If you’re stuck in traffic jam, you should use it to broaden your horizons. Try rolling down the window and talking to the driver next to you. You never know, you could gain a whole new perspective on life just from being stuck on the road on the way home from work!

4)      Plan Your Life: Are you one of those people who plans out your monthly budget in the shower or meticulously maps out their latest family holiday when you’re walking the dog? We all need time to plot out our major life decisions, and there’s little else to do in a traffic jam, so why not use the time wisely and plan out your life!

5)      Multitask: If your energy levels are low and you’re stuck in a traffic jam, why wait to get them back up! Bring a nice snack to pass the time with, and you can actually turn it into a somewhat nice experience – especially with the radio turned up!

Don’t Let the Realities of Life Get You Down

Ultimately, we all hate being made to ensure the tedium that is a traffic jam after whiling away the hours at work. Unfortunately, it’s just a fact of life, but that doesn’t mean you should let the boredom get you. Try one of these five tip and you could actually be either really productive, or just have good time!
